Public Engagement

Beyond my academic research and teaching, I have also been involved in various forms of public engagement and outreach.

Since 2012, I have engaged in 'action research' and provided expert advice and analysis to the Coalitions for Change program in the Philippines, a program operating with the sponsorship and support of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and The Asia Foundation (TAF). I have engaged in similar work for the Ford Foundation in Indonesia in the early 2000s and for the UK's Department for International Development (DfID) and Oxfam in Vietnam in 2015. For more information on this work and the publications it has generated, click here.

Over the past two decades, I have provided expert reports and served as an expert witness in dozens of legal cases involving human trafficking, terrorism-related offenses, and insurance disputes related to the Philippines, Indonesia, and other countries in Southeast Asia.

I also authored a series of reports on Indonesia over 1998-2007 for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR):

Indonesia: Minorities, Migrant Workers, Refugees, and the New Citizenship Law (Geneva: United Nations High Commission on Refugees, March 2007).

Indonesia: Continuing Refugee Problems, November 2001 – August 2002 (Geneva: United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, August 2002).

Indonesia: The Limits of Democratization and Decentralization, January 2000 – October 2001. Geneva: United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, October 2001.

Indonesia: Trends Toward Consolidation, Threats of Disintegration. Geneva: United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, December 1999.

Indonesia: Transition and its Discontents, July – November 1998 (Geneva: United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, December 1998).

I have occasionally written short pieces for various newspapers, magazines, and online publications, and I have also granted interviews and given public lectures, for some of which there is incriminating evidence in the form of online videos, for example:
